There’s something magical about starting over in a new place. Whether it’s moving across the world, across the country, or just out of the town you grew up in, new environments invite transformation. You begin to grow in ways you didn’t expect—maybe you feel lighter, braver, more fully you.
This is what it means to grow where you’re planted. When you land in a space that feels safer, more aligned, or simply yours, things begin to shift. You stretch. You bloom.
But what happens when you go back home?
The Tug of Old Soil
Many of us return “home” for visits—back to the place we once knew so well. We expect comfort, familiarity, maybe even a sense of belonging. But sometimes, something else happens: we shrink.
Suddenly, you’re not the grounded, confident version of yourself you’ve become in Vancouver (or wherever you’ve built your new life). Instead, you’re reacting to old triggers, falling into old habits, or questioning how real your growth really was.
It can feel like your roots are tangled again.
It’s Not You—It’s the Environment
Plants thrive when the soil, light, and space support them. People are no different. You may have grown because you were finally planted somewhere that supported your becoming. That doesn’t mean you were never that person before—it means your environment finally gave you what you needed to become more fully yourself.
So when you return to the place you left, it’s natural to feel the pull of your past. Old roles, family dynamics, cultural expectations—these things are sticky. They remember who you were, not who you are.
Growth Isn’t Lost—It’s Tested
Just because you’re triggered or regressing doesn’t mean you’ve failed. It means you’re human. Going back home is like visiting the garden you outgrew. It doesn’t mean your new roots aren’t strong—it just means they were planted in different soil.
What You Can Do:
🌱 Stay grounded in your current self.
Bring your new rituals, boundaries, or beliefs with you. You don’t have to leave your growth behind at the airport.
🌱 Notice what no longer fits.
What conversations drain you? What roles do you slip back into? This discomfort is information. It’s proof you’ve changed.
🌱 Be kind to your past self.
You needed to be that version once. And you outgrew them. That’s strength, not shame.
🌱 Remember: you can always replant.
Home doesn’t have to be where you were raised. Home can be the place where you’re finally growing.
You grew because you were planted in the right soil.
That version of you isn’t gone just because you feel different in old places. She’s still there, still rooted, still thriving—in the life you’ve built.
