Building Community When You’re New to Vancouver

Building Community When You’re New to Vancouver

Moving to Vancouver is exciting — the mountains, the ocean, the vibrant neighborhoods — but it can also feel a little lonely at first. Many newcomers notice something called the “Vancouver Freeze,” where people are polite but slow to form deeper connections. If you’re feeling this, you’re not alone. Here are a few ways to break the ice and start building your community.

1. Start with shared activities
Join a hiking group, running club, art class, or community garden. People often connect best through activities rather than small talk with strangers. Websites like Eventbrite are great places to find local gatherings.

2. Volunteer your time
Giving back not only feels good but also connects you with like-minded people. Try organizations like United Way, Neighbourhood Houses, or local food banks — you’ll meet people who share your values.

3. Explore your neighbourhood hubs
Frequent the same coffee shop, farmer’s market, or library branch. Familiarity builds trust, and before you know it, you’ll have “regular” status and friendly faces to chat with.

4. Be patient and consistent
Deep connections take time here. Keep showing up, follow through on invitations, and don’t be discouraged if friendships take a few months to grow.

5. Know where to find mental health support
If loneliness is affecting your well-being, there’s help available. You can connect with the Irish Canadian Immigration centre, counsellors, join newcomer support groups, or call BC 211 to find community resources.

The bottom line: Vancouver is a city where community grows slowly but deeply. Invest your time, show up authentically, and you’ll find your circle.
